Biography
Anishta Choramun was born in Mauritius. She lives and works in Ireland. Her work is informed by the diverse components that create contemporary society. She sees society as a jigsaw puzzle, which functions through co-existence and co-dependency. She is curious about how humans affect each other, and how they conceptualise their identities.
“As we move through the environment, progress from one place to another, encounter different aspects of life, meet new individuals, or encounter a novel situation, we transform who we are through experience which shapes our identity. We pick up and add to aspects of ourselves and let go of markers that no longer fit us. Whilst these changes help us grow and become who we are, we also lose a little as individuals.”
Chooramun finds the process of making artworks continuously self-educating. During the fabrication of the final works, she playfully adjusts the materials and scales, exposing the fragmentation of thought and feelings. Her artworks create abstract interlinking visual intriguing elements, comprising of a series of 3D constructions made from diverse materials. Audiences are invited to move through the arrangements of artwork and visually piece together the fragments of the installations.
She has recently begun to explore dance as a language, focusing on a classical Indian dance form called Kathak. Originally performed by nomadic travellers, it is used to tell stories. The Kathakars communicate these stories through rhythmic foot movements, hand gestures, facial expressions, and eye work, as a kind of sign language. Her sculptures incorporate references to these gestures and movements, informed by a collaboration with traditional Indian dancers.
